Title IX Compliance Check: Self-Audit for Colleges and Universities

10-31-2024 1:00 PM EST.

The Department of Education (DOE) released its long-awaited Title IX Final Rule last spring. In education programs and activities, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex. The regulations promulgated in response to Title IX make it clear that these protections extend to all areas of discrimination, including athletics, pregnancy, and sex-based harassment. Title IX can be complicated to apply, and some issues and violations can occur unintentionally. There are some cases that may even trigger the DOE's Office of Civil Rights to intervene. To ensure your program follows all Title IX requirements, it is important to thoroughly understand the scope and application of Title IX and conduct your own self-audit. Rick Verstegen, an attorney at law whose practice focuses on education-related matters including Title IX compliance, will discuss compliance with Title IX and conduct a self-audit of your program, including how it can be applied to all areas of discrimination based on gender.
